1. The Welcome To Las Vegas Sign

With its distinctive neon script, this iconic symbol is a fantastic example of creative signage design.

Why

The iconic "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign was conceived in 1959 by a local salesman named Ted. He proposed the idea to Clark County, and the design was entrusted to Betty Willis, a talented artist at Western Neon.

The design

Willis, one of the first women to work on neon signs, created the distinctive diamond shape and the vibrant neon script. The sign quickly became a beloved landmark, attracting visitors and photographers alike.

Its unique design, featuring bold lettering and a playful diamond shape, has made it a cultural icon, appearing in countless movies, TV shows, and photographs.

2. The Country Day School Sign

This mixed media sign is visually appealing and durable.

Why

This particular sign, designed and installed by AGC Signs boasts a unique blend of materials, combining the rustic charm of wood with the stability of metal and concrete.

The wooden canvas, with its varying board heights, offers a distinct character, while the blue background and white text create a striking visual contrast.

The Design

The design choices here are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. The combination of wood, metal, and concrete ensures the sign's durability, enabling it to withstand various weather conditions and remain intact for years to come.

Furthermore, the use of natural materials like wood and concrete adds a touch of warmth and sophistication to the surroundings, creating a welcoming atmosphere. This natural appeal is particularly fitting for a school sign, fostering a connection to nature and a sense of community.

3. The McDonald’s Sign

Simple but memorable, the golden arches are another great example of creative signage design.

Why

The iconic golden arches of McDonald's are arguably one of the most recognizable signs in the world. More than just a logo, it's a powerful marketing tool that has transcended its original purpose and become a cultural phenomenon.

the design

The minimalist design is instantly recognizable. Two curved lines form the arches, creating a visually striking and memorable image. Their simple form and bright colour make them instantly recognizable to people from all cultures and backgrounds.

For many, the golden arches evoke strong emotions – nostalgia, comfort, and familiarity. They represent a childhood treat, a quick and convenient meal, and a shared experience.

Beyond its marketing effectiveness, the McDonald's sign is a testament to the power of creative signage design. It's a simple yet elegant symbol that has achieved global recognition and enduring cultural significance.

4. The #PickeringProud sign

The #PickeringProud sign encourages user-generated content.

Why

This sign, located outside Pickering's City Hall, makes a bold statement with its imposing presence.

the design

Utilizing ground-mounted, self-lit channel letters, it commands attention from a distance. The illuminated letters, crafted with precision, cast a captivating glow, ensuring maximum visibility even in low-light conditions.

This impactful display leaves a lasting impression on passersby, both residents and tourists alike. It encourages people to stop and take photos and videos, and create user-generated content online with the city's hashtag, #PickeringProud.

5. Platform 9 ¾

Harry Potter fans love visiting this fun sign!

why

Platform 9 ¾ is a fictional train platform in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, located between platforms 9 and 10 at London's King's Cross Station. It serves as the departure point for the Hogwarts Express, the train that takes young witches and wizards to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. To access Platform 9 ¾, one must run through a solid brick wall between platforms 9 and 10.

the design

While Platform 9 ¾ is fictional, a popular tourist attraction at King's Cross Station features a portion of a brick wall with a luggage trolley disappearing into it, allowing visitors to take photos as if they are running through the wall to board the Hogwarts Express.
