Pylon signs are often exactly what a business needs to stand out.

CHOOSING THE PERFECT SIGNBOARD

When establishing physical branding for a business, external, roadside signs are a great way to set the first impression. This type of sign is sometimes referred to as a “signboard” but is more commonly known as a Pylon Sign.

To help you decide on the best signboard/ pylon sign for your business, we have put together a helpful collection of explanations, examples, and tips.

DESCRIPTION

Signboard/pylon signs can take on a variety of shapes, sizes, and uses.

Description: Signboards are more commonly known as Pylon Signs. In contrast to other outdoor signs, pylon signs are typically taller and larger, often constructed on sturdy metal legs. Pylon signs are often seen in shopping plazas or parking lots.

Application: Because pylon signs are so tall, they extend above the surrounding bustle to make it easier to find the advertised businesses. If you need a sign that stands out, especially because there are many other businesses in the area, a pylon sign may be a wise choice.

Pylon-style signboards can even be put up temporarily when needed.

Construction: Pylon signboards are most often built with metal frames. They have a high center of gravity and need to withstand the elements day in and out and metal has shown to be the best material for these purposes. As in the picture above, the façade of the sign can be built to be modular, meaning the individual business slats can be removed and replaced.

Legal: Pylon signs cannot be constructed just anywhere. They should not obstruct traffic or the movement of vehicles, especially around corners. Additionally, many plazas or building sites will have specific regulations regarding the size or type of sign that is allowed on the property. You can either personally reach out to the landowner or municipal government to inquire about specifics, or you can find a sign company that will do that legal groundwork for you.

EXAMPLES

To help give you some ideas of what is possible, this section contains a few different styles of pylon signs, as well as some notes on what makes each one different.

  • When building on soft or uneven ground, pylon signs can be anchored with cement foundations.

  • Signs can be integrated into the layout of your parking lot in case there isn’t any other free land to work with.

  • Pylon signs can safely be raised around two stories high without needing invasive additional supports.

  • Tall signs are perfect for getting above trees, cars, or clustered buildings so that everyone can see where your business is.

  • Pylon signs can be built from a variety of materials: metal for durability, plastic fronts for affordability, or digital screens.

  • Ask your local sign company about how to incorporate a digital screen into your sign.

  • Digital screens can be programmed to show a variety of messages, from company slogans to weekly deals.

  • This sign is anchored with a hefty base, ideal for soft ground that has the potential to shift.

  • Wind typically does not blow hard enough to interfere with permanent exterior signage, but if your region has specific environmental issues, your sign can be constructed to better handle those risks.

  • Sometimes all a sign needs to do is display your company’s logo, and signboard signs do so with style.

PURCHASING TIPS

Pylon signs are a big investment, so make sure to do your research.

Deciding on a new sign is a big decision. Remember these helpful tips to help you make the best decision you can:

  • Carefully consider your signboard’s location - confirm that it is not built over any important underground wires or piping.

  • What will it display? Do you have a slick logo, or is it more important to display other operational details?

  • Does it stand out from the environment around it? Careful choice of colour goes a long way.

  • Contact an experienced, professional sign company. A professional sign company should be able to help you with:

    • Logo and sign design.

    • Manufacturing.

    • Researching relevant permits in your area.

    • Determining price. Many companies will offer free quotes.

    • Maintaining your sign as time goes on.

AGC Signs did a great job and the price was competitive - actually less expensive than other companies that I got quotes from. They kept me up-to-date with the project and I am really pleased with their work. I would definitely use their services again.

Excellent service. Great Customer relation. The design we had submitted for printing wasn’t professionally done, they redesigned it all including our logo to give our brand a new look. Best business I’ve dealt with this year so far.
