Your Custom Metal Sign: Essential Information

1. Using Metal For your Sign

In this section, we’ll look at the pros and cons of metal signs as well as what metals are commonly used in a custom metal sign.

Pros of Using Metal

  • Customizable

  • Sleek

  • Strong/Durable

  • Weather Resistant

Cons of Using Metal

  • Tends to be more expensive

  • Materials may be heavy (this means you’ll likely need professional installation, removal or repair)

You’ll want to think about the purpose and location of your sign in light of the pros and cons before you settle on a sign design. Ask an expert at AGC what materials would best suit the signage project you have in mind.

Commonly Used Metals

Metal signs are generally made from the following metals:

Let’s look at why someone might choose these materials:

Brass

Brass has an elegant look and is ideal for name plates and smaller signs, particularly for interior signs.

They are especially ideal for heritage sites because of their aged look. They also look great with dark backgrounds or even brick backgrounds.

Stainless Steel

Stainless Steel is a popular metal choice for signs, particularly for exterior signs, because it resists corrosion, rust, and other wear. Stainless steel also works well for monument signs located at your company’s entrance.

Aluminum

Aluminum is lightweight and a great choice for interior signs because your sign can be painted. Standard aluminum signs tend to have a semi-gloss finish. You can also choose from reflective or brushed aluminum. Reflective aluminum signs are great for exterior use because they reflect light and are more visible at night. Brushed aluminum is a great choice if you want something to look more elegant. Signs made with brushed aluminum are a great option for reception areas where guests will arrive first.

2. Examples of Metal Signs

In this section, we’ll provide some examples of signs that incorporate or are mostly made of metal.

Monument Signs

A Monument Sign like the one shown on your right is a great way to boldly introduce your site’s location. The metal lettering matches this bold presence and can be cut to fit any sort of monument sign, whether it is made from concrete or brick, etc. Also, because stainless steel is weather-resistant, it’s a great choice for exterior signs.

Wayfinding Signage

Metal makes a great choice for Wayfinding Signage because it is easily customized and, when your message is etched onto name plates, they are easily adjustable when changes in your staffing or room locations occur. Many signs are designed so that you can simply slip out the old metal label/plate and replace it with a new one.

Pylon Signs

Due to the durability and strength of metal, metal also makes a good choice for Pylon Signs.

Pylon Signs are often designed with a strong steel frame and aluminum coverings (including letters and graphics). They will be secured below with concrete footings so we know they won’t be going anywhere!

3. Tips For Owning A Metal Sign

If you already own a metal sign or are thinking about owning a custom metal sign, here are some tips to help you care for it:

Cleaning

Although metal signs are pretty easy to clean, it is a good idea to check with your sign manufacturer before you use any cleaning products on them. That’s because they may have used products that require special care.

Generally speaking, you’ll want to follow these steps to clean your metal sign:

1. Wipe off any dust, dirt, and debris from your sign’s surface with a soft cloth.

2. Prepare an effective cleaning solution by mixing together:

  • 1 bucket of warm water

  • 1 cup of white vinegar

  • 1 cup of liquid dish soap

3. Using your cleaning solution and a soft, clean cloth, gently clean your sign.

4. Gently blot your sign dry with another clean cloth.

Remember not to use any abrasive cloths or cleaning products and work gently so that you do not scratch the metal surface of your sign. We advise you not to use harsh chemicals as certain products may actually damage your sign.

Also, if you see some light rust, try a paste made from baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the rust spot and leave it for about 30 minutes. Then wipe it off with a damp cloth.
